Today's blurb comes from Letterer-and-Artist Jo.

The idea to have Iain do a blog at the end of Issue #1 was Lynn's. She described a page where readers could get inside the world on a more personal level, where both Iain's thoughts and the comments of other characters, with associated icons, could be seen. To me, the natural next step was to make the page actually look like a blog, and I volunteered to do that. Lynn agreed and provided me with the content and the comments to play with.

So welcome to page 29, the first page where I actually did the art!

I had a look at a couple of weblogs before I started. I needed ideas about what information was given on a blog set-up and how the design generally worked. Although Iain's user name, Mind_Maze, had been provided by Lynn, I also needed a title. The one I settled on, "the truth is in here" is a typically trite blog title with a nod to the X-Files. It may -- or may not -- also be a clue to a revelation which will happen in Issue #2. Then I had all sorts of fun choosing fonts and colours and designing icons for the commenters: Suzette's, for instance, translates as "Where does the soul live?", and Anders has a ComicCon badge that's been manipulated.

It was only after I showed the first draft to Lynn that I realised she hadn't had any idea what I intended to do with her writing. Somehow "making it look like a real blog" hadn't communicated itself very well in her head (her trust in me is, in hindsight, rather touching!). (Lynn - it just looked much more bloggy than I thought it would!) She was absolutely thrilled with the result, and she came round one afternoon and we made all the changes that finished off the page. One of my favourites was changing the colour of the "comment" link to a visited link colour, as though the reader had clicked to view the comments…

Page 29 is part of the Dark Red universe. Unlike other pages, it was not based on photographs carefully posed and photoshopped: it's a carefully designed internet page represented on the internet, which doesn't actually exist elsewhere on the internet. It may not be irony, but it makes me smile!

Till next time, have fun and take care.

Letterer Jo
