(We're taken on a journey up a cobbled alleyway.)

Panel 1

(We are looking up an alleyway in the city, you could wander past it everyday and never notice it. The tiny old back street is cobbled and there is greenery growing up the sides. It's gloriously unattended and forgotten. Large bricks make up the building on the left and you can see a tower of some kind and trees in the distance.)

Text Box: Everyday hundreds of people walk past a certain cobbled alleyway. Only a few notice it. The rest walk past, busy with the day's stresses. Once in a blue moon someone will see it and amble up, curiosity getting the better of them.

Panel 2

(We have gone up a bit and round the corner. There are old shops and various old buildings up on the right and a stone wall on the left. You can just about make out a lamppost on the right and a little white building on the right.)

Text Box: They wonder why they never noticed it before and then they go back. And they forget.

Panel 3

(Close up of the white building on the right. It has big old black doors and white walls. The signpost is hanging down, old fashioned and wooden.)

Text Box: They never see the sign. It takes a certain type of person to enter.

Panel 4

(Close up of the old wooden signpost. It says ‘The Maze’ in old-fashioned black and red letters.)

Panel 5

(We are taken inside the Maze, which is lined with books. The manager is sitting, deep in thought behind the counter/desk. There are books all around him, a dark till to his right, a laptop to his left. There is clutter here and there and if you look really closely, a cross is in the foreground and a bottle of water. He has black hair with side burns, and is wearing a deep purple shirt with a lighter tie. He is serious looking and intense. This panel is from an angle facing into the corner of the bookshop where the desk is.)

Text Box: Some bookshops are airy and well lit. They have romance novels and the latest self-help books. You might even be able to buy postcards, notebooks and a cup of coffee.

Panel 6

(Straight view of the desk and the manager behind looking very unfriendly. He is resting his hand on the desk in front of him and there is a cup of coffee in front of him.)

Text Box: Foreign pastries are for sale.

Panel 7

(Head and shoulders shot of the manager.)

Text Box: And the staff are helpful and pleasant.

Panel 8

(Close up of his intense dark eyes.)

Text Box: This is NOT such a place.

Issue #1 Page 15 - Enter the Maze
13th April 2007

Today's blurb comes from Jo The Letterer again.

The last time I did this the comic was on page 5. We'd met Sarah and Gary, and apart from a mysteriously sudden case of Stargardt blindness and an introduction with demons and a curse, the comic hadn't quite developed into its supernatural promise.

Ten pages later and a great deal has happened. We now know that although Sarah is blind there are some things she can see, and sometimes what she sees is not the same as we would see in her shoes. We've met Iain Mach, who is an ordinary human… more or less. Together, Iain and Sarah are on a quest of sorts to find out more.

As Lynn pointed out last week, Issue #1 is now half way through, so this page is an introduction again, this time to the second part of the comic. Lynn presented me with this page, and it's a lovely page, with the photographs taking the viewer on a journey from the ordinary to something other. She also gave me the wonderfully descriptive and quietly witty text. It took a great deal of experimentation to meld the two in such a way that the text as well as the pictures flowed easily. Further, the voice of the omnipotent narrator hasn't really been heard before, so the whole style of the text was new. On the whole, I'm very happy with the result.

Given that Lynn has delegated this blurb to me, I am also privileged to introduce a whole new character. He runs the Maze, which, as you suspect, is probably more than it appears…

Until next time, be safe,

Jo

(Edit: 9th June 2007 - This is the first page with the narrator, the old page one didn't really have a narrator. It's now in the gallery if you want to have a look.)
